Margaret James

Margaret Pugh James passed away October 8, 2018 at the age of 92.
Margaret was the daughter of William Felix Pugh and Dora Grover Pugh and wife of James (Jim) F. James. She was born in George West on November 5, 1925. Margaret skipped a grade and graduated from George West High School as Valedictorian at the age of 16.
Margaret worked various jobs throughout her lifetime as a Kindergarten teacher, L.S. Morrison as bookkeeper, and 48 years at First National Bank in George West. Her work day did not stop after she got home from her day time job. After working a full day, she would take Jim to Gussettville where ranch work awaited her and where she always found time to play with the grandkids. Then she would fix supper, do household chores and get up the next morning and do it all over again. She was a very strong role model for her sons, grandkids and extended family by showing them the importance of working hard and having fun while doing it.
Margaret was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the Altar Society and worked at all church functions for many years. She was admired by so many for her straight forward, matter-of-fact approach to everything and her great sense of humor. You could always expect a witty comment or response from Margaret. Each summer, she made sure that she got her six grandkids together for a week of time with "Nana" where they went on adventures in the fields at Gussettville, played Tripoly, and built tents of quilts all over her house. There was never a grandma that was more fun.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, James F. (Jim) James; daughter-in-law, Brenda James; and three sisters and four brothers.
Margaret is survived by her two sons, James (Jim) F. James, Jr. of Pleasanton and William (Willie) James and wife Nancy of George West; six grandchildren, Seree (Joe) Holzhaus of Castroville, Shannon (Doug) Fohn of Austin, Krista Reyna of San Antonio, Stacey Gilmore of Austin, Brent (Lauren) James of League City and Jacque (Rick Corso) James of New Braunfels; six great-grandchildren, Nathan (Nate) Reyna, Adalyn (Addie) Fohn, Ella Gilmore, Patrick Fohn, Ava James and Will James; one sister-in-law, Mildred James; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. George Catholic Church in George West. A Rosary will be recited there that evening at 7 o'clock.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 13, at St. George Catholic Church followed by interment at the Gussettville Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Brent James, Doug Fohn, Joe Holzhaus, Rick Corso, Terry Stewart and Carl Williams.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lamar James, Joe Bartlett, Bill Holland and Ross Harris.
A special thank you is extended to all friends and family for their thoughts and prayers and to the administration and staff at Live Oak Nursing Home for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Gussettville Cemetery, P.O. Box 326, George West, TX 78022 or Dobie/West Performing Arts Theatre, P.O. Box 1223, George West, TX 78022.
