Obituary

Lionel James Edmonson Jr., 85, of Beeville, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026.

Lionel James Edmonson Jr. was born on June 23, 1941, to Mary Page Edmonson and Lionel James Edmonson Sr. in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a proud graduate of Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas.

After high school, he received his bachelor’s degree at UT Arlington and while studying to get his Doctorate in Organic and Chemistry at Texas A&M, he enlisted as a Captain in the Army where he was stationed in Washington DC and Vietnam. Upon finishing his enlistment, he returned to finish his doctorate.

While looking for a job, he drove the van for his mother’s private elementary school in Fort Worth, where he met a teacher there, Sylvia Underwood. They fell in love and were soon married on August 22, 1974.

He and Sylvia moved to Beeville in 1975, where he took a position at Bee County College. He later retired from the college after a fulfilling career teaching Organic Chemistry.

Lionel accepted Christ at a young age and volunteered his time at First Baptist Church in Beeville, Texas, where he served as a Deacon.

With his free time, he enjoyed being with his family and playing the clarinet. Over the years, he could be found playing in musicals, community band and the church orchestra.

He was deeply devoted to his wife, who passed away in 2020 and will now be reunited with her once again.

He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Edmonson; his son, Lionel (Jim) Edmonson III; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on August 24, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Beeville, Texas. The funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. at the same location with Dr. Steve Spivey officiating.
