Judge Jimmie Lane

Judge Jimmie E. Lane, 80, of George West, Texas, passed from this world into the loving arms of God on Jan. 18, 2023. He was surrounded by his beloved family.

Jimmie was born Feb. 18, 1942 in George West to Rufus Edgar Lane and Allie (Umphres) Lane. He graduated from George West High School and proudly served in the United States Navy from 1960-1964. On April 30, 1982, he married his sweetheart, Mary A. Lane. Jim worked in various capacities including service repairman, management, and coin technician for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. until his retirement in July 1992. He was a faithful member of Oakville Baptist Church where he served for many years. Jim loved his Lord and Savior and was a man of unwavering faith. He was also a member of the Lions Club and Pioneers.

He loved bird watching, trips to West Texas, and wildlife. He collected coins, arrowheads, and phone insulators. He also enjoyed photography, wood-working and cooking. Most of all, he loved nothing more than being home spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Allie Lane; grandparents, Walter Ernest and Lula Frances (Smith) Lane and Malachi Lemar and Mary Theresa (Bartlett) Umphres; a sister, Nelda Pawelek; and four brothers, Rufus “Dude” Lane Jr., Chuck “Jack” Lane, Billy Lane and Steve Lane.

Left behind to cherish fond memories include his wife of 40 years, Mary Lane; children, Kathy Jo Lane Wiles and Thomas Dean Lane; three stepchildren, James N. Whitis Jr., Tammy Lynn Garza and Tiffany Kay Whitis; a brother, Daryl Lane; a sister, Aletha Lane; grandchildren, Crystal Davis, Chelsea Welever, Ryan Lane and Rylee Lane; step-grandchildren, Kaylan Hood, Kristan Whitis, Allison Garza, Anthony Garza, Courtney Gill, Shawn Gill and Ty Gill; and great-grandchildren, Zara Engles Davis, Easton Welever, Holden Welever, Declan Welever and Matthew Hood. Jim is also survived by his mother-in-law/dearest friend, Mildred Williams, who held a very special place in his heart.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Oakville Baptist Church.

The funeral service will also be held at Oakville Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, with Clif Abshier officiating. Burial will follow in the George West Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tom Lane, Kerry Lane, Allen Lane, Mark Lane, Jason Gass, Anthony Garza, Stephen Smith and Wayne Baldwin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Whitis, Daryl Lane, Chris Gass, Carlos Garza, Ryan Lane, Shawn Gill and Randy Davis.

Donations may be made to Oakville Baptist Church, 100 Church Street, Oakville, Texas 78060, or the American Cancer Society in memory of Jimmie Lane.
