John Matthew “Matt” Curbo, 70, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.
Matt was born on October 30, 1955, in Beeville, Texas, to Jeff and Yvonne Curbo. As a young man, Matt was involved helping his father with the cattle, hunting, playing baseball and football, and was a member of the Key Club. He grew up attending the First Presbyterian Church and graduated from A.C. Jones High School in 1974 before earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Southwest Texas State University. He later followed a new calling and graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing.
Matt began his early career as a mud engineer with Baroid Oil Company, where he worked for many years. He later partnered with his brother, Michael, to persue their own entrepreneurial endeavour, M&M Mojados. After the passing of his brother, Matt chose a different path and dedicated himself to caring for others as a registered nurse and worked in several East Texas hospitals. His compassion, kindness, and gentle spirit made him an exceptional caregiver.
Above all else, Matt was a devoted father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his three most cherished sons: John Michael Curbo; Jeffery Scott Curbo (Ashley); and Joshua Taylor Curbo (Michelle), and their mother, Melody Curbo.
He also leaves behind his adored grandchildren, John Miller Curbo, Ella Faye Curbo, Witten Drew Curbo, and Wylan Mae Curbo, along with his beloved nieces and nephew: Hayleigh Wagnon (Trent), Holly Hennig, Hillary De Jesus (Johnny), Christian Moron and their children. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Curbo Hennig, as well as many special friends.
Matt was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Jeff and Yvonne Curbo, his brother, Michael Wayne Curbo, and aunt, Marcelle “Fifi” Roberts.
Whether you knew him as Matt or John, he will be remembered for his kind heart, easygoing nature, and warm smile. He had a laid-back spirit that put people at ease. He was always a joy to be around and never missed an opportunity to share a joke. Matt made it a habit to give you a nickname that stuck when he found you endearing in any way. He greeted female friends with a tight squeeze and a kiss on the cheek and the guys with a warm “abrazo”. Most recently, Matt enjoyed building ponds and shaping the landscape on the dozer while keeping the livestock well fed (when he wasn't getting stuck chest deep in the mud or tearing something up!). His generosity, sense of humor, eternal optimism, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Galloway & Sons Funeral home in Beeville. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Reverand Don Taylor officiating.
Matt will be laid to rest at Beeville Memorial Park Cemetery in Beeville, Texas.
Pallbearers are John Claude Breidenbach, John (Bubba) Hensley, Gene Hermann, Dr. Peter Morgan, Tommy Pfiel, And Tom Wilde.
His family and friends will forever cherish the memories they shared with him and will carry his love and legacy in their hearts. His memory will continue to live on in every story shared by all of us who loved him… and there are many! Matt loved the Lord first, and in lieu of flowers, we ask that your donations in his honor be sent to a charity of your choosing.
