Jesse Johnson

Jesse L. Johnson, 93, died Friday, Feb. 12, 2010. He was born to Lee Marvin and Ollie Gertrude (Baker) Johnson in Dudley on Nov. 29, 1916. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of WWII. He married Laura Frances Dyer on Oct. 6, 1936, in Karnes City. He was a lifetime resident of Pettus, a member of First Baptist Church in Pettus and a former member of the Pettus Rotary Club. He owned and operated Johnson Construction Company and Johnson Brothers Welding. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Laura Caroline Fish. Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Laura Johnson of Pettus; one son, Jim (Jerry) Johnson of Houston; one daughter, Alison (David) Hutchens of Beeville; three grandchildren, Claire Morrow, Jenifer Eggleston and Heather Fish; one brother, J.E. Johnson of Orange Grove; one sister, Theresa Dyer of Boerne; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation was held Sunday at Galloway and Sons chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Galloway and Sons chapel with Rev. John Sisk officiating. Music was provided by organist Roy Cox and vocalist Lynn Broadway. Selections were "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone," "It is Well With My Soul" and "Out of My Bondage." Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lynn Broadway, Ignacio (Nacho) Vasquez, Tom Jackson, Ray Langley, Alton Myer, Larry Silvey, Marvin Vos and David Chesshir. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Luther, Johnny Crumley, U.F. (Happy) Hoffman, Luke Luckenbach and Floyd Wolfe.
