Janet (Martin) Light

Janet (Martin) Light, also known to many as “Mrs. Light,” of George West, Texas peacefully passed away on May 11, 2024. She was born on September 19, 1942, in Charleston, West Virginia to Orlan “Ted” and Letha (Sharp) Martin. Janet married her husband, Donald of 63 years, on April 2, 1960, in West Virginia and moved to Texas.

Mrs. Light cared for many young children for more than 45 years with her own home daycare. She took care of multiple generations of families and loved being able to help working parents. She was so proud of her perfect day care inspection records, she even burned toast one time to prove the smoke alarm worked when an inspector marked points off for a non-working smoke detector. She loved taking care of children and it became her purpose in life.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Light; infant son, Donald Light, Jr.; and four of her six siblings, Orlan Martin Jr., Carol Sue (Frank) Elkins, Nancy Belcher and Denny Martin.

She is survived by her two brothers, Carl (Wanda) Martin and David (Anne) Martin; sister-in-law, Verna Martin; brother-in-law, James Belcher; daughter, Kimberly (Michael) Womack; son, Corey (Rebecca) Light; five grandchildren, Jordyn (Allen) Klement, Nathan Womack, Dalton Light, Emma Womack and Devon Light; and two great-grandchildren, Kara and Luke Klement.

A family graveside memorial service will be held at a later date to allow travel time for extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the South Texas Botanical Gardens at 8545 S. Staples, Corpus Christi, Texas 78414. Mrs. Light always missed the trees of West Virginia, and an exhibit tree will be planted in her honor.
