George Mixson

George Emory Mixson, 76, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018. Mr. Mixson was born January 1, 1942, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to Eleanor and James Mixson.

He married Mary George in 1964 in Marshall, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kirk Mixson of Norway, South Carolina.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Beeville; two daughters, Connie Hilbrand and husband Merlin of Tyler, Texas and Stacy Cohagen and husband John of Hallsville, Texas; grandchildren, James, Sydney, Jared, Ashleigh, Holden, Ja'Myah and Harper; brother, Tommy Mixson and wife Jeannette of Cordova, South Carolina; and sister, Jackie Townsend and husband Luther of Columbia, South Carolina.

Mr. Mixson was a member of the U.S. Navy from September 1959 to October 1982. He had a love for aviation as an air traffic controller, instructor, and private pilot. During his time in the military, he received recognition for outstanding performance as well as "Sailor of the Year" for NAS Chase Field and TRAWING 3. After his retirement, he was awarded a Special Service Medal in Washington D.C. from New Zealand for his efforts in recovery during Operation Deep Freeze after a plane crash on Mt. Erebus in Antarctica. He was Father of the Beeville Fire Department and selflessly served for 45 years.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home chapel. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Bevans Welder officiating. Interment will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018, at Liberty Cemetery in Harleton, Texas.

Members of the Beeville Volunteer Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.
