Ellen Boenig

Ellen Mae Boenig went home to her Lord on April 16, 2017. She was 111 years old. Mrs. Boenig was born on October 21, 1905, to Jerome F. and Lillie Mae (Johnson) Tuttle in Oakville, Texas. She married Walter August Boenig on October 14, 1922, in Woodsboro, Texas. She was a member of Trinity Christian Church. Living a life as fulfilling as she did, Ellen was able to see many things come to fruition, including the introduction of the television, the turning of Chase Field into an airport and extensive traveling. She once said “I have been to every state except for Rhode Island; it was so small, we couldn’t find it.” A homemaker and avid gardener for most of her life, she would recall accounts of when the horse and buggy was a popular travel means, as her family didn’t have a car until she was 13. When she and her husband moved to Woodsboro, they rented land to farm. This was a time in life that she would talk about churning her own butter and how people could buy groceries on credit, settling up after the harvest. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; children, Durwood Boenig (Lee Nell), Vera Mae Curd, Juanita Grace Shanks, Ord Gary Boenig; great-granddaughter, Tracie Swendsen; and son-in-law, Don Malone. She is survived by her two sons, Jerome “Buckshot” Boenig and his wife, Nellie of Beeville, Texas and Walter “Butch” Boenig Jr. of Henderson Nevada; her daughter, LaNelle Malone of Wichita Falls, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Beeville, Texas. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at La Rosa Cemetery in Woodsboro, Texas. Pallbearers will be Glen Boenig, Dan Boenig, Jyro Boenig, Mark Boenig, Sidney Shanks, Kelly Shanks, Dixon Shanks, Padrick Malone and Eric Boenig.
